Administration Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
