Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
